astronomers. did you feel that? it happened. >> i hear that's super dangerous. >> good morning and welcome to "early start." >> as 5:00 a.m. in the east. up first, it was an afternoon of horror for holiday shoppers in suburban portland. police say 10,000 people were inside the clackamas town center when a gunman opened fire. mass chaos followed. three were dead, including the gunman, and a young woman left critically wounded. >> the mall is supposed to be a place that we can all take our families, feel comfortable that this is a great place, especially the hole diday seaso like this. these things aren't supposed to happen. >> let's get right to the scene. dan, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, the main question this morning, and it's really the question anytime you have one of these shootings, is

who was the shooter, what was the motive, and were any of the victims targeted or was it simply random. at this point we don't know any of that. when we do know is it started about 3:30 in the afternoon, the shooter carrying some kind of rifle. he was seen jogging through the macy's and the shots rang out somewhere near the food court area. he was wearing dark clothing. some kind of hockey mask. when it was all over as you said, three were tedead, you including the gunman. >> i was in the elevator going downstairs and people start saying go up, go up. and we just didn't know what's did go on. we just tried to escape. it was scary. was shobing experience. >> reporter: authorities say they have tentatively identified the shooter, but they're not telling us who he is.

he's reportedly in his 20s. they're not telling us anything about the victims. we can tell you that the mall will be closed today. you might see all the cars here in the parking lot. the reason for that is you people just kind of left their belongings including car keys. we're told that mall management will have some sort of procedure for people to pick up their purses and everything they left behind today or maybe sometime tomorrow. >> dan, we heard a lot of reports about someone that was taken to the hospital, a young girl. do we know anything about her condition? i know she went through surgery. >> reporter: yes, she's apparently 15 years old. we're told she's in stable condition, but this is a serious injury. she's expected to live. obviously a horrifying situation for her and we hope to get more details about her condition as the day progresses. >> so they still have not identified who she is either? contract no. there are some reports on social

media apparently her family may be identifying her. at this point we're waiting until authorities give us the green light and then we'll release that information. >> all right, dan, i know you're working hard on the who, what, why, all of that. we really appreciate it this morning. thank you. in the next hour, we'll be joined by sergeant phillips from the sheriff's office and at 6:30, we'll talk to kira allowland, she was inside the mall holding her six month old baby. big news overseas overnight while you were sleeping. north korea appears to have successfully launched a long range rocket that happened this morning, a move the united states has labeled a highly provocative act that threatens regional security. it's believed it blasted off the west coast and the u.s. military which monitors the activity of that isolated nation says it looked like an object was placed into orbit. so let's get up-to-date. chris lawrence is at the

pentagon. >> we're getting better and new information about that north korean launch. u.s. officials now saying that the satellite that north korea put into space is now in polar orbit. norad has been monitoring it with its space sensors. remember, they tried a rocket launch earlier this year back in april. they did not have much success. this is the first time they have seen all three stages of that rocket launch work and be able to put a satellite into orbit. it sounds very benign, putting a satellite into orbit is not something that you would think of that has military connotations. but the same technology that you use to put a satellite into orbit is really the same kind of technology that you would use to build a long range nuclear missile. >> and the timing appears to have been some kind of surprise to u.s. officials. how worried is the pentagon right now after this launch?

>> well, one official that i spoke with said it is a step up in north korea's cape ability. and this has been condemned all around from south korea and japan all the way up to the white house. but there are several still big stages to go through before the u.s. has to be seriously worried about north korea's ability to extend its range to the united states. they've got to work on heat sensors. because getting something up is one thing. but to get the weapon for re-enter the at loss fear and not burn up, that's quite another. they also have to work on accuracy issues. just shooting something out, again, one thing. having it hit your intended target, something much more difficult. >> still as you said, a big deal. we'll be talking to you again later this morning. the united states is officially recognizing syria's opposition coalition as legitimate representative of the

syrian people. it should provide a psychological lift. president obama telling barbara walters why that decision was made now. >> the syrian opposition coalition is now inclusive enough, is reflective and representative enough of the syrian population that we consider them the legitimate representative of the syrian people in opposition to the assad regime. >> the u.s. joins britain, france and turkey in recognizing the syrian opposition. hu go chavez is recovering from cancer surgery in cuba this morning. the operation lasted more than six hours and was completed correctly and successfully. this is the fourth cancer related surgery since summer of 2011. at least four homes destroyed by a gas line explosion. this is just north of charleston, west virginia.

a local station reporting five other homes were damaged, as well. that fire so intense it damaged apinterstate. several people were treated for smoke inhalation. west virginia's governor says no deaths have been reported. so did you feel it? turns out we got a cosmic close shave. two asteroids buzzed earth, one passing inside the monday's orbit. in nasa says it came within 145,000 miles of our planet. that's pretty close. here's the cool part. it called an eclipse only visible to astronomers. this is the scary part. it was only discovered a couple days ago. there are apparently like thousands of these that come in and out, but had it hit earth, it could have caused damage of about 800 square miles. that's a big -- >> so i should be concerned about this. >> perhaps the fact that they discovered it so late is problematic, but it wasn't --

$500 billion this automatic tax hikes and spending cuts. i sound like a broken record. along with the potential for a new recession. shannon travis is following the deal make. do we know what was in the proposals? >> we're getting details in drips and drabs. the white house has offered according to a source telling cnn to basically revise their revenue target. p president obama originally proposed $1.6 trillion in new revenue. he wants to raise the tax rates on the wealthiest americans. now we're being told that he's revised that number down to $1.4 trillion. that's obviously a difference of $200 billion. a democratic aide also telling cnn, i'll read the quote, that offer was coupled with a serious spending cut number with real entitlement reform. so that's from the white house

side. on the counterproposal from the republicans, we don't have a lot of details on that, but from boehner's office, republicans are basically awaiting spending cut specifics from the white house. meanwhile, as this goes on, you can imagine that lawmakers here in washington are still sniping as you mentioned publicly. take a listen at the latest from john boehner. >> if the president doesn't agree with our approach, he's got an obligation to put forward a plan that can pass both chambers of the congress. because right now, the american people have to be scratching their heads and wondering when is the president going to get serious. >> on the other hand, democrats are saying that any deal shouldn't be made on the backs of the poor. take a listen at tom harkin, democrat from iowa. >> why is it that now somehow we

possible motive. here in manhattan, police are trying to solve a murder mystery. a killing that may be a professional hit. a gunman walked up behind a man on monday right on a midtown manhattan sidewalk and shot him in the head. the victim had an arrest record on the west coast. mayor bloomberg says his killing was not random. ravi shankar has died. the 92-year-old passed away tuesday in southern california after undergoing heart valve replacement surgery last thursday. he brought indian classical music to the west appearing at '60s rock festivals, woodstock, teaming up with george harrison to help stage the concert for bangladesh in 1971. he was also the father of jazz singer nora jones. some big names taking the stage tonight at new york's h

but it is a pleasure to look at that this morning. hong kong of course guy auiant business center in the world. u.s. stock futures are up. >> and markets had a good day yesterday. the dow rose almost 80 points. christine romans is talking markets. >> and you can thank big ben bernanke, the fed chief. a lot of people saying that the federal reserve and its herculean efforts to keep the economy moving is why stocks are up, why the economy is growing, and they're expecting the fed to announce new measures, new st stimulus to keep it going. so when you hear the catch phrase that the fed is the only game in town, the fed is the only game in town. around the world it has been central banks who are independent from governments, central banks who have been doing so much, pumping money into the system to keep things going. s&p 500 up 13% so far this year.

all of these uncertainties we talked about, the fiscal cliff, all of that stuff, it is because of the certainty of fed policy many people are telling me, also because they think on wall street the fiscal cliff will be avoided. they think on wall street the only thing left to do is a little bit of shouting over what the top rate will be. 36%, 37%. they think corporate taxes will come down and we know that that is in the latest sort of proposal from the white house that they will consider corporate tax. so ben bernanke really important and that will drive things. can i tell you since election day, the s&p is up since election day. remember that big dip right after the election, concerns about fiscal cliff. what you're seeing is that market participants are putting money on the line that they think the fiscal cliff will get solved. >> so you come in here every day rightfully so very concerned about this fiscal cliff. and we just have 20 days left. no reason to believe this is going to happen today or tomorrow or the next day. wall street seems to have priced

in a deal already. so what happens if it doesn't? >> huge selloff. and that is a big risk. if washington doesn't follow through with what the betting money thinks, that they'll be fighting over the top rate, that they will be lowering the tax rate -- do you remember the b k bailout and it didn't pass? all of a sudden it was down 700 points and suddenly washington passed the bank bailout. a lot of people are saying the worst case a their dwro is another thing like that. but the market thinks no one is stupid enough not to figure out how to overt the fiscal cliff. and they think that they're in the stupid enough to be able to push this over for a long term over the cliff. and that's what they're hoping here. >> it's a hedge. >> it is, but i think you're seeing signs of progress. and sometimes in the silence i think you're seeing the signs of progress, right? >> fingers crossed. all right. thank you. 25 after the hour.

scandal. welcome back to early start. it's nice to have you with us. >> it's 29 minutes after the hour and we still do not know the identity of the lone gunman who opened fire in a crowded mall in suburban portland, oregon. he killed two and critically injured a third before taking his own life. it was a day tchaotic scene. shoppers, store worker, even a small santa had to dive for cover and scramble for the doors. dan simon is live at the scene this morning. dan, what's the latest? >> reporter: well, you can imagine the challenge for law enforcement who came to this mall, it's 1.4 million square feet and they found the shooter, but for a while, they didn't know if there were multiple shooters. at this point, police in their own words have said they have tentatively identified the shooter, but they're not telling us who he is until they're 100%

sure. he's reportedly in his early 20s. what we do know at this point is the shots rang out about 3:30 in the afternoon. he was carrying some kind of rifle. he was wearing dark clothing. some kind of mask. maybe a hockey mask. according to witnesses, as you said, it was pandemonium inside the mall. people ducking for cover, people ducking under clothes racks, that kind of thing. even the mall santa got down on the ground. here is how one worker inside the mall described the scene. >> i work at a kiosk right below the food court. we heard about six shots at first and people scattered like crazy and everyone left. we waited around for a second and people at the stores were opening doors for us to get in, ushering everybody in there. >> reporter: again, don't know anything about the shooter at this point and police are not releasing the victims' names. the next news conference is at

10:00 a.m. local time. the mall will remain closed as the investigation continues. you can see behind me still a bunch of cars in the parking lot. that's because when this happened, a lot of folks just ran outside the mall door, left their belongings, left their car keys. at some point the mall will develop a system for people to come back and retrieve their items. >> still no details on the identity of the shooter, or the weapon he used or confirmation at least, any send of when this will come to light? >> reporter: those are great questions. we do know it was apparently shall kind of rifle. some kind of rifle. there were early reports that he got off 60 rounds, but at this point, we don't know. we'll kuwait fwait for authorit release new information sometimes this morning. >> all right. thanks. in the next half hour, the latest on the mall shooting investigation when we're joined

doing something right. >> in the last five minute, he's been retweeted 3400 times. including me. >> good stuff. congratulations to the pope. >> how can we get that kind of leverage here, huh? 33 past the hour. the other major story we're following closely, north korea. it made a bold move this morning and launched a long range rocket. in the process, it lifted a satellite into orbit. the united states immediately condemned the launch calling it a highly vprovocative act and south korea called it a threat to the peninsula. what you can tell us, paula? >> reporter: at the same time as we're hearing the international condemnation, we're seeing dancing on the streets in pyongyang. so north core re, a everything is highly choreographed. this is the view they want the world to see. but we are seeing dancing on the streets.

pyongyang residents are talking about how proud they are that north korea has managed to do this. north korea says its satellite is in orbit, it claims it was a resounding success. south korea also says the pay load did end up in orbit, but they're waiting to see at this point whether or not the satellite actually works. so certainly the south korean government is furious with this move. they say it's against the u.n. security council resolutions, it threatens peace on the peninsula and also across the whole world. and that's a response we've really been seeing across this region. now, one rocket expert we did speak to here in seoul did say that he was surprised but said that it was quite impressive that north korea did seem to have mastered this very complicated modular system and also said in theory north korea if this is in fact a success, north korea could now attach a military payload to one of these

rockets and it could reach the other side of the world including the united states. >> they knew there was going to be mass condemnation over this. why did north korea launch this rocket now? >> reporter: it's all about timing for pyongyang. the timing was absolutely critical. we are just a few days away from the anniversary of the death of kim jong-il. he died last year december 17th. so kim jong-un, his son in control, wanted to commemorate that, and also 2012 is a very crucial year for north korea. it is the send tenry of the country's founder. the one in april failed, but it was crucial because it was within this year. so north korea really wanted to get it done before the end of the year. >> paula hancocks, thank you for that. 36 after the hour. a maryland health official is confirming a second person has died there in the fungal

cruiser was gone until people started calling 911 to report a cop car driving erratically. >> kind of reminded me of the keystone cops. they were all running for their police car to chase this guy. >> the cruiser was later found with a blown tire at a ft. worth apartment complex parking lot. the weapons in the trunk all accounted for. porter is on the run. >> got to be a tough day for those police officers today. a former storage wars star is suing the a and e network claiming the show is a fake. dave hester claims the network fired him in retaliation after he complained about the network stuffing lockers with valuable things to make the show more exciting. i believe they call that assisted reality. he also claims the show rigged the bidding, even paid for a female member elastic surgery to add sex appeal. this on storage wars. a spokesman told radar they don't know about any lawsuit and

49 minutes after the hour. a lot happening overnight. >> we're still waiting to learn the identity of a gunman who killed two people and critically wounded a third at a mall packed with holiday shoppers outside portland, oregon. police say the gunman eventually killed himself. this tragedy unfolded late in the afternoon yesterday at the clackamas county town center. there were 10,000 people inside when shots rang out, sending customers diving for customer and scrambling for the doors. the u.s. government reacting swiftly this morning to word that north korea has launched a long range rocket which hoisted a satellite into orbit. it's called the development a highly provocative act. u.s. and south korea believe the launch is a cover for testing ballistic missile technology. it's supposed to mimic real pot. but a new government report shows how dangerous synthetic marijuana can be.

with no odor. so all you notice is relief. aspercreme. welcome back. 13 minutes past the hour. surprising news out of florida this morning. fourth graders in the sunshine state rank amongst the best in the entire world, accordingo the results of an international study released this week. the test, taken ta by students in 49 countries, has florida's fourth grade students coming in second place, just two points behind hong kong and 13 points above the u.s. national average for 2011. look at the numbers. first year florida has participated in the study which also measured math and science scores for fourth and eighth graders. we'll get to that in a moment. with me to discuss the florida education commissioner pam stort is joining me this morning. we're very excited for you. congratulations. talking about world leaders in

education, finland, singapore, hong kong. your state received the remarkable ranking of number two. how did you do it? >> it's amazing, and it's been a concerted effort for a number of years, florida is focused on reading and considered every single teacher a reading teacher. the primary focus for florida for a number of years, and very proud of the work that our students and teachers have done through this time. >> i want to show that. the fourth grade reading scores have improved from 1998 to 2011. and very impressive. you say that you have reading teachers. what does that mean? >> well, all of our teachers, kindergarten through 12th grade, no matter the subject they teach, incorporate reading skills and strategies within the course. there has been a focus for a number of years on the skills that are necessary for a student to be able to be reading.

and certainly when we look at what students are doing today, versus what they did in 1 the 9 98, it's amazing. >> if we can talk about specifics. if i'm living in another state and my students are having a hard time with reading scores, i would like to know specifically what you are doing to get scores up. can you tick some of the the things off you are doing? >> we began this work with a balanced lit racy approach, where we incorporated all of the important strategies that good readers know to do. and our teachers focused on that primarily in the reading classroom and focused effort on spending, a time period specific during the day, 90 minutes on reading and reinforced through other subject areas whereby those teachers would incorporate same reading strategies.

teachers got reading training, thousands and thousands of teachers that went through extensive training on reading and continue to do that, even today, with other subject area teachers so they know how they can incorporate reading in the classroom. >> another part of the test. fourth and eighth graders received more average marks when it comes to science and math. the critical key areas in education. closer to the national average. do you think you will incorporate changes there? did you do that in order to get those grades up? >> we really have already begun work in that area, and our students are focused on math and science. if you look at the student performance in math and science over the years, we have improved in that area as well. and we continue to do so, particularly as we move into the common core standards, much more of an emphasis there. and we'll see more improvement than we've already seen in florida. >> i don't mean to criticize, i

have to mention some criticism that has come forward, and that's this specific test that your students took, they have never taken it before, and took it specifically in the reading portion, and some people are saying perhaps, massachusetts, for example, would have tested their students in this particular area that perhaps they would have ranked really high as well. do you agree with that? >> we have no way of knowing, except for doing a comparison of the nape scores in massachusetts and florida, and typically massachusetts does outperform florida, but because as you say, there was not the oversampling testing in massachusetts, we can't make the comparison right now. we can make the comparison that florida is second in the world and far above the united states navrn that area. >> that is certainly quite a distinction and we're very proud of you and can't wait to have a comprehensive paper that comes out to tell us how we can duplicate this in other states.

10,000 people inside the mall as you said. we talked to or local affiliates spoke to a mall employee. here is what he had to say. >> i work at a kiosk in the middle of the mall right below the food court. we heard six shots at first, and people scattered. everyone left. we waited around for a second and people at the stores were opening doors to get in, ushering everybody in there. >> reporter: well, the central question today, and always the question, who was the shooter, what was the motive? were the victims targeted or random? at this point, we don't know. we know there will be a news conference at 10:00 a.m. local time. one thing i want to point out is you can see all of the cars here, obviously, nobody here, because it's 3:30 in the morning, we know when this happened, people dropped their belongings, so car keys inside, wallets, people's belongings, at some point, the mall will develop a system for people to come back and retrieve their

released the i'dentity of the shooter, they are talking to the family first. north korea angered neighbors with the launch of a long-range rocket that they claim hoisted a satellite into orbit. the united states immediately condemned the action, calling it a highly provocative act, and south korea considers it a threat to the korean peninsula. we're in seoul with reaction. what is the very latest, paula hancock? >> reporter: zoraida, within the last hour, we heard from north korea from the foreign ministry in north korea, quoted by the state-run news agency, kcna, it's a condemnation that came pyongyang's way. they are calling "hostile forces" showing signs of sinister bid to take issue with the launch, which was for peaceful purposes,."

this is the rebuttal from what we've heard from washington, seoul, tokyo, beijing, even from russia. all of the condemnation laid on north korea for carrying out the rocket launch. and north korea says the right to use outer space for peaceful purposes is universally recognized by international law. going counter to the united nations resolutions that have been passed against them. but, of course, we do note that the united nations has banned the use of this long-range missile technology. a resolution came into place after the failed attempt back in april, so certainly the international condemnation will keep coming. a very interesting thing to point out, though. we have seen some celebrations on the streets of pyongyang. dancing on the streets. we've been hearing from some of the residents saying they are delighted this has been a success. of course, we have to take this

with a pinch of salt, this kind of regime is not one that you would cross. this is the reaction that would be expected in this kind of regime. a very isolated, dictatorial regime and certainly no one on the streets of pyongyang would say anything, but the utmost confidence toward kim jung-un and attempts at a rocket launch at this point. zoraida. >> and, paula, the timing is very significant. can you talk to us about that? >> reporter: that's right. it was incredibly for north korea to get this done before the end of the year. coming up, a significant anniversary. december 17th, the year anniversary of kim jong ii, the father of the leader now, his death. so certainly that is one for kim jung un wanted to commemorate. and 2012 is the centennial of
